If this EP is a glimpse of the future of Rock n Roll, you can all sit back and relax. The future of Rock is looking great. The debut EP from RavenEye does one thing and does it well, it makes you want more. I recently had the privilege of seeing them perform twice and can tell you that this EP is just the tip of the ice berg. All five songs are on my mp3 player and get constant rotation and I can’t wait for the full length album. I don’t know the titles of the songs I heard when I was with the bands live show but it is some of the best music I have heard this year, if not the best. So let’s break down the EP songs performed by Oli Brown (Vocals, Guitar), Aaron Spiers (Bass, Vocals) and Kev Hickman (Drums).
The EP starts with ‘Breaking Out’ with a heavy distorted bass and flange that grabs your attention with a steady drum beat holding the song in a groove that allows the vocals to take control of your senses. The song is an attention grabber and sucks you into a great opening song. The next track is ‘Get It Started’, which is my favorite track on the EP. It has a beautiful groove that is very infectious and some fun changes in between with an old school dirty guitar solo and sound. The vocal lines are melodic and contagious which makes for a fun song to sing along with, which you will catch yourself doing almost immediately. Next we have ‘Hey Hey Yeah’ which starts with a heavy distorted bass riff that immediately grabs your attention and when the guitars and vocals kick in you get the same feel as when you heard the groove in ‘StrangleHold’ from Ted Nugent. This is another great song with a cool use of a flanger and another favorite of mine from this brilliant EP. Time to move on to ‘Run Away’ which starts with Oli’s vocal before Aaron’s bass starts a steady constant groove through the entire track. Great harmonies and some interesting changes and buried guitar riffs toward the end. The Final Track on the EP is ‘You Got It’ which starts with a distorted guitar sound that reminded me of Robin Trower at times and the vocals sounded very similar to Chris Cornell when Oli sings in his high register. This song has it all and is a brilliant ending to a brilliant EP. I challenge anyone to come up with a better EP this year. We at Backstage360 can’t wait for the album which will be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. And to the guys in RavenEye, you are the best and the music industry needs more musicians like yourselves.
