Southern California’s own Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness settled in comfortably on the Trestle’s stage during the evening of the Day One of KAABOO Del Mar. The former Emo/punk rocker is now lending himself to a more Indi-Pop / Alternative Rock sound as he ventures out on his own. The former lead singer of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin looked energized and excited to be there, as he danced around behind his upright piano. This guy is a performer, and you could tell he was high on life as he bounced around on stage, during…between…after songs, it didn’t matter. He made sure to play some hits from his early days while introducing us to his new solo album, self titled Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.
You could tell this guy has a nice following; he had hundreds of people singing along to his songs. After a few minutes in the crowd, I could see why…his uplifting chord progressions and powerful messages were infectious as I caught myself engrossed in his music, along with the crowd. Did I mention this guy is a MASTER performer? He transitioned seamlessly between songs, providing a silent nod to the excellent backing musicians he has supporting him. It seems he dropped some of the heavier rock sounds in favor of the uplifting pop sounds of his new album, but this rocker approves…it’s still Alternative enough to be considered Rock in my book!
Southern California may not have birthed this young man, but I know that OC claims him, and Del Mar (San Diego) agree, that this man is Southern California’s musician…even though he would describe him as completely opposite to that claim!
Andrew McMahon has created an uplifting and energetic album, and he transferred that entire feel, with the magic of the lights, fog, and supporting musicians, right onto that stage nestled nicely in the paddock at Del Mar. The entire crowd, yours’ truly included, were waving and swaying back and forth throughout the show…he owned it. Check this guy out before the corporate machine hikes his ticket prices!
