On August 16, 1977, Bill Cody was traveling with the Elvis Impersonator named Johnny Harra, playing guitar and singing for Benedict the band that backed up Johnny for his shows. Upon reaching Dallas, they found out that Elvis Presley had died overnight. The ensuing outpour of emotions from fans around the world was amazing. Everyone was shocked and wanted one last glimpse of the King. Johnny and Benedict played for three weeks straight to sellout crowds at a Dallas night club and headlined a Tribute Concert at the Cotton Bowl on August 28, 1977. Johnny made the cover of the Dallas Morning News the next day with headlines about the Great Pretender performing as if he was Elvis…the King of Rock and Roll.
Bill Cody left the band to pursue his DJ/MC career working in Dallas area discos while building a team of great DJs to help staff multiple clubs and Mobile DJing. That was the start of Party Time Productions, a group of DJs that not only spun the tunes but also entertained the crowd. Needless to say this concept took off and has turned into a multi-million dollar enterprise called Bill Cody’s Party Time Texas celebrating their 40th Anniversary serving the Dallas and Fort Worth area this year.
DJ/MC Bill Cody is still one of the top, most requested entertainers in the North Texas area. Bill specializes in Corporate and Wedding entertainment as well as MC work. People have compared him to Dick Clark or David Letterman, a couple of Bill’s idols and mentors who have influenced his career and his life. One of the key influences was Elvis Presley, not only because of his music and performing style, but the fact that several key dates coincided with Bill and Elvis:
- The day Elvis died 8/16/1977, Bill started entertaining with Johnny Harrah in Dallas.
- Bill’s first son was born on Elvis’ birth date January 8th in 1995.
- January 8th was also his father’s birthdate.
The connections with Elvis seem almost uncanny and surreal but never the less interesting and an amazing tie-in with Bill, his family and career.
Four Decades later, DJ/MC /Party Host Bill Cody is still Rockin’ and would make the likes of Elvis, Johnny Harra and Dick Clark proud!
