Bob Hillman – Lost Soul

Lost Soul

Bob Hillman strays from the norm with his new album “Lost Souls.” The album itself is ten years in the making, with extensive reworking done along side singer/songwriter pal, and major influence, Peter Case. You can tell from the first note of the aptly names “I Think I’ve Taken Enough S*** From You This Year” that this isn’t going to be your normal folk-rock Bob Hillman record.

First thing to notice is aesthetics…the album artwork is folky with the shadow of a man (possibly Bob himself…I’ll have to ask him) graces the cover of this album. Once you hit play, you enter the world of Bob and Peter as they take you through an ethereal sounding world infused with subtle Jazz notes and harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash. The lyrics usually relate to a personal or first person style anecdote.

“I Think I’ve Taken Enough S*** From You This Year” – I love the title…it’s long and a pain to type, but it tells you exactly what to expect in the song. Bob conveys a story of frustration and exhaustion that comes with abuse. The beauty of these lyrics is in the generalities that allow nearly anyone to connect with the song.

The rest of the album takes you through a mixture of sounds and stories. “Big Sur” takes you on a journey with a laissez-faire flowing melody that incorporates subtle jazz notes and smooth flowing percussion while “You Started Drinking Again” has a downtrodden, almost sad, feeling with a country vibe to the instrumentations.

You are definitely in for a strange but delightful experience when you enter into the world carefully crafter by Bob Hillman and Peter Case that is “Lost Soul,” available now on Amazon.com. Make sure and get your copy now!
