Breland – My Truck

Daniel Gerard Breland, known professionally as BRELAND, appeared at the Murrieta Town Square Country Music Festival and won over some die-hard country music fans.

At first glance, the thin, bespectacled young man appears quiet – and nondescript – until he takes command of the stage and begins to sing.  His energy is infectious, but his music isn’t traditional Country Western, it’s a mixture of almost every other kind of music possible.  It’s rap, hip hop, rock, gospel, R&B, and soul.  It’s a heated hybrid of sound; dynamic and passionate.

Born and raised in New Jersey, his parents are both talented gospel-singing ministers. His father, Gerard Breland, was named as a New Jersey Superior Court Judge in 2014, while his mother has her doctorate in Education.  Together, they make up the ministry team, “One Flesh,” and help couples strengthen their marriages.

BRELAND’S high school years were spent away from home, at a boarding school, where he began to compose music, telling everyone that he was an artist. He taught himself to mix and produce his original creations and by the time he graduated, he was voted “most likely to become famous,” by the student body.

Turning down an offer to study at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music, BRELAND instead headed for Washington’s Georgetown University to study business and marketing.  He joined an a cappella singing group, the “Georgetown Phantoms,” and in 2014 released his first EP, “Stop Everything.”  He continued in his relentless pursuit of music and continued writing songs for other artists, as well as himself.

After college, BRELAND moved south to Atlanta, Georgia, where his persistence began to pay off.  He quickly developed a following for his unique brand of hybrid country.

In 2019 he released his song, “My Truck,” and it quickly rose to No. 26 on Billboard’s “Hot Country Songs” chart.  Describing his new style of music, BRELAND says that he felt it was time that the perception of country music changed.  After remixing the track with country star Sam Hunt, the song went Platinum in 2021.  Platinum status only happens when a tune sells one million units.

Since then, BRELAND has successfully collaborated with various stars of country music, namely Keith Urban for “Throw It Back,” Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts for “All I See,” Dierks Bentley and Hardy, in “Beers on Me,” Jimmie Allen, for “Somebody,” Mickey Guyton, “Cross Country,” and Nelly for “High Horse.”

In recent years, black artists, both new and established, have emerged on the country music scene, and BRELAND has collaborated with most of them.  The results are a new take on country western.  In the past, most country music artists have been white, and the contributions of black artists to the genre have refreshingly made their mark.  Country music will never be the same; it has evolved to catch up with the modern age.

On stage, BRELAND comes alive as he shares his unique style, firing up the crowd who dance in the unrelenting heat in front of the stage.  His songs range from gospel, rap, to pure country.  When he invites a group of mini-skirted, boot-stomping western dancers onstage, the audience goes crazy.

BRELAND is anything but quiet and reserved; he displays a confidence and grace usually seen in more seasoned performers.  He has worked for years to realize his dream and share his music with the world.  An energetic performer, his songwriting style and singing show respect for the country genre.  He energizes it by adding rap, soul, and hip-hop.  This movement for change from black performers and songwriters has been in the making for a long time.  The addition of the subgenres of country, rap, hip-hop, soul, R&B, and gospel has been attracting a new generation of fans, as even veteran artists, like Beyonce, have “gone country.”

Watch him live onstage, enjoying every joyous moment, rapping, dancing, singing and playing to the enthusiastic fans.  This is the future of country western, and this young man is on his way to stardom.
