Carly Rae Jepsen – Rockin Your Neon Socks Off

Carly Rae Jepsen sure rocked the neon socks off of her brightly clad fans Thursday night at Humphrey’s.

Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay is located on Shelter Island in San Diego between Humphrey’s Restaurant and Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn. Humphrey’s is a unique venue since it’s outside on the harbor. At the time of year you get to enjoy the beautiful sunset while you wait for the main act.

Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian born singer, song writer and actress. She got her start in high school musicals and then went to the Canadian College of Performing Arts. In 2007 she placed third in Canadian Idol, which she felt was actually a win, all of the publicity without the contract that winners are locked in too. Shortly after she released her first album, Tug of War, in Canada. Her American fam came a few years later in 2012 when her catchy single “Call Me Maybe” hit the airwaves and got stuck in the heads of us all. That song reached number one in 18 countries and she road the ride of its success. Since then she has released 3 more albums, including the one featuring the infamous number one and a second with the equally as catchy “I Really Like You”. You may have also caught her on the Grease: Live television special.

This tour, entitled The Dedicated Tour, is in support of her latest studio album Dedication, her 4th studio album, released May 17, 2019. Carly Rae Jepsen is known her catchy 80s inspired pop tunes, her stage show is reminiscent of the era as well with laser lights and her bright colorful costumes.

Kicking off the show was up and coming artist, Phoebe Ryan. She is a vivacious, energetic little thing and a perfect complement to Miss Jepsen. She got her start writing songs for other artists, such as Britney Spears and Oh Honey. She was also featured on songs with artists such as Skinny Mars and The Chainsmokers. She was signed to Columbia Records in 2015 and she released her first EP featuring the single “Mine”. She got the fans warmed up with this song as well as a couple of her singles and teased a few new songs from her up coming album.

Carly hit the stage shortly after. She pulls out all of the stops, flashy lights, full band, back up dancers and, of course, a disco ball. Her wardrobe follows suit. First a head to toe fushia bodysuit with tullie skirt then a 70’s throw back yellow fruit patterned dress with feathers on the sleeves and neckline. This all goes perfectly with the constant energy of the show. She pleased her loyal listeners with the aforementioned hits as well as the singles from the tours featured album, “Party for One”, “Now That I Found You” and “Too Much”. She also got the crowd singing with the fun song “The Store” from the Emotions: B sides album.

Overall this was a great show, great attentive audience and fabulous venue. I am sure she will come around on tour again and when she does, be sure to add it to your calendar!
