Daring Greatly at the Belly Up! With all the adversity and division in the world today, what better way to unite the generations than with this super talented multi generational band with a message of goodwill and love for the world!
The evening took place at the famous Belly up in solana beach California and revved up with a high energy band called The Routine. They are a San Diego based soul/funk ensemble who challenges you to try to not to move your body while enjoying their upbeat tunes. They gave a fun and zesty performance, and got us all elevated in anticipation for Daring Greatly!
Just back in town from their 2019 Spring/Summer “Give Myself To The World” tour, this was Daring Greatly’s official SoCal homecoming show. The family band with the most righteous blood harmonies I’ve ever heard kicked off the show with a touching video intro which told you much about what you need to know regarding this band that refers to their music as Heartland Rock & Soul. Words such as Joy, Family, Connection, Mother Earth, and Soul came across a screen with similar beautiful images; all describing Daring Greatly’s vision. I have seen this band several times, and this was a new surprise. Turns out that wasn’t the only trick they had up their sleeve!
Another treat in store was the addition of saxophone/flute player Mark Lessman, along with Kyre Wilcox, a new face on bass, both of who added to the fullness of the band’s sound. Also, of interest is the fact that it was the last show for electric guitarist Brandon Haddow for a while, as he is headed to Canada to record a solo project. In Haddow’s absence, the band will feature guest appearances from local guitar favorites. Haddow was in his element Sunday night, and absolutely gave it his all with high energy riffs we loved! On with the show…the band kicked off the set with their new song “Give Myself To The World” their new single which was officially released the day of the show on all music platforms. Everyone in attendance even received a free music download of it! The crowd was energized, and we joined in when asked to raise our hands and sing along. Next up were primarily original songs, one of my favorite being Cold Dark Night. Getting to see saxophone live on this was so fun for me to experience live! Another first for me was the song Bad Timing, with flute accompaniment. an already beautiful song, the flute gave it an added dimension. In addition to Give Myself To The World, the band showcased two other yet to be named new songs, which will all be on the upcoming album. The band is currently holding an Album Fundraiser, in an attempt to create and record new original music for a CD, as well as a full vinyl edition! I was so delighted to hear so many of the bands original tunes played, as they also do covers, but their originals are by far my preference. For those of you new to Daring Greatly, they are not only a band who has a loyal following, packs the house, and keeps you on your feet grooving all night, they are a band with a message. Their songs tell a story of their own personal journey. Their authenticity is felt, inspiring us to dream big, look within, be bold, and Dare Greatly!
