Enuff Z’Nuff formed in 1984, out of the mean streets of Blue Island, Illinois. The roads they have traveled have been long and not without their fair share of pebbles, rocks and boulders. They have the tenacity that kept them driving forward through it all. Most notably right from the starting line as their record label threw them in the genre of Glam Metal. The band never saw themselves as such, more Glam Pop/ Pop or Rock. They did dress outrageously which at the time I can see from a marketing standpoint is where they saw hem trending; however, when you take a listen to their music, I see the bands point. Check them out and decide for yourselves. I can’t help but recall a saying I’ve heard throughout my years, “You can’t judge a book by its cover” At any rate the first record, Enuff Z’Nuff, released in 1989, is still a stolid piece of work. When you can stand the test of time, you know you are more than just a label, except for this one – TALENTED.
Fast forward to here in 2018 they are currently holding 13 studio albums, with the latest release Diamond Boy, this past August.
The title track, Diamond Boy, kicks off the festivities a fun one. You’ll find yourself fist pumping while you laugh and sing-a-long. The story that is told is an epic one for sure. The guitar work in this one does not go unnoticed by this chick – nicely played, Sir! I hasten to go song, by song but I could, because I have a bunch to say about each one of the tracks here. Okay, never mind you talked me into it, away we go.
Where Did You Go – Yesteryear, we all wonder: Where Did You Go? I feel like how did this happen? When did I get here? I’m pretty sure I wasn’t that high all the time… you may just relate….. love the gang vocals.
We’re All The Same – This one is about the modern world of technology. Yes, a blessing and a curse. We potentially can be, and have to be “camera ready” all the time, but we are not all rock stars, except in our own minds, unless you are a Kardashian….The general population, not so much. Drums on this one are particularly on point.
Fire & Ice – the heaviest tract so far, cool harmonies, I love the way they slide right into this one. If you want to know what I’m thinking, take a listen.
Down on Luck – This one is straight from the heart in an Enuff Znuff kinda way. It’s a beautifully written and performed piece. I don’t know if a “pretty song” is a “thing”, however, this is what I think when I hear this beauty!
Metalheart – This one stole my heart. The guitar riffs are super catchy, and the drums are so in the pocket, sounds amazing. For those of you who may only mildly know what I mean when I say things like “the drums are in the pocket”, they are essentially driving the car, along with the bass, and the guitars do their thing and dance all over’em. That is exactly what I hear in the one. We all like but not sure why, what is the why, it grooves!
Enuff Z’Nuff is still going strong after all these years, lineup changes, as some of you musicians out there may be all too familiar with. Fear not, when you have perseverance, drive and talent, you pull through it all. Enuff Z’Nuff have done just that. I love that as a young Spicy, seeing and hearing these fine fella’s back in the day, and today I can do it all over again “post trama”.LOL
