There’s a band that has been gaining some momentum from Los Angeles, California called “Falling Doves.” Recently, back from touring Japan, I thought I would venture out on a Saturday night to see them play at the House of Blues in downtown San Diego. I showed up early to get a good spot to check them out with my wife. After, a couple beers and talking to some friends in show biz, I was getting a little antsy to see the band that has been getting so much buzz. Once Falling Doves took the stage I was immediately impressed with the band’s huge sound and performance.
The lead singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Leyva commanded the stage with poised confidence and rockstar moves that would have made U2’s Bono proud! This guy was unbelievable and it was a sight to see. Chris, singing style was pure emotion and gritty. Clearly in control of the crowd and the band he pranced around the stage like a cat on a hot tin roof a la The Cult. Man, I wish I had my camera this guy had every rock move imaginable down and used his guitar better than a Samurai brandishing his sword. The lead guitarist and the drummer did not disappoint, the whole band was great for that matter.
The lead guitarist Mike Dorsey was on fire laying down classic rock solos that were ear catching candy. His hook and melodic melodies played nicely into each song and complemented Chris’s style of singing very well. Not to be out done Greg Smith the drummer was slaying the skins, calling out to the Rock Gods! Greg’s hard hitting style made the band sound epic. The rest of the band was also, amazing with two keyboard players, a saxophone player, and bass player that was badass! They were all simply amazing to watch.
Now, normally I’m very hard to impress but, sometimes and rarely a band will come out and blow you away. That is exactly what happened to me and my wife on Saturday January 12th at 8pm. As Chris Leyva grabbed two cymbal stands and held them up over his head while the drummer was still playing to end the show. He knew that Falling Doves had come and conquered. It’s a beautiful thing to behold when band is kicking on all cylinders. If you get a chance go see these guys!
