Grand Funk Railroad is one of my favorite bands of all time and one that I’ve been fortunate enough to see probably 20 times back in the day. Founding member and drummer Don Brewer and I got a chance to speak, albeit briefly about the time back in the day about a show that we had met at. When asked about which show I responded that it was at the Boston Tea Party Club in 1969. He immediately said oh you mean with Santana? The two of us had a big laugh at the fact that we both had remembered at all. This was all right after their first album “On Time” had come out o Capital Records and produced two singles. “Time Machine” which was released in July of that year and “Heartbreaker” which released in January of 1970. (1) The album had been played so much that the grooves were worn out and I was forced to buy another one. Mind you this was a couple of months after Woodstock so everyone was plugged into rock and roll in a big way especially with Santana opening for them. At that time, they were all young guys just getting their careers going. No one knew back then how big they were going to be but I knew they were special from the get go. By 1971, Grand Funk equaled the Beatles’ Shea Stadium attendance record but sold out the venue in just 72 hours whereas the Beatles concert took a couple of weeks to sell out.Their success hasn’t surprised me in the least.(2) It was cool just reminiscing with Don all these years later.
Back then, the band was a power trio consisting of Mark Farner, Don Brewer,Mel Schacher and they were on fire with this lineup. They would leave audiences speechless after their shows. The new lineup still consists of Don Brewer on Drums and Vocals, Mel Schacher on Bass, Bruce Kulick (Guitar) and Tim Cashion, (Guitar / Vocal) and Max Carl. (Keyboards / Vocals) This band simply rocks. Their show at the Del Mar Fair in San Diego was no different. Even after all these years have gone by, these cats still rock out just like all those years ago with their precise arrangements, great vocals and amazing songs. Yes they are an “AMERICAN BAND” but much more than that they are one of America’s best ever. This multi platinum band was the biggest band in America for a long time and still deliver that power live. Catch them live this summer at a town near you. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Grand Funk Railroad still has it big time!
