3D printing has been an innovation in manufacturing. That tech is now brought to the world of musical instruments.

BackStage360 spoke with founder Mathew Canel about his process:

Q: Compared to a traditional Instrument, how long does it take to produce a 3D printed instrument?

A: For our full-size violin, it takes about fifty hours. Forty-eight, forty-nine of those hours are printing and about an hour of human labor so assembly, bridge finishing and sanding and polishing.

Q: What other instruments are you currently working on?

A: We are working on a Cello and a fifteen-inch viola. Other instruments are planned in the future.

Q: Who’s your typical customer?

A: Students, schools and people who like to play outdoors a lot and don’t want to worry about humidity.

These instruments sound remarkably good and they are rugged too!

Q: Talk about the Euphonic Array

A: We are the inventor of the Euphonic Array. The Euphonic Array is a combination of a handful of different inspirations inspired by the glass harmonica, the Cristal Baschet, Marimbas, and Xylophones.

Q: How is a Euphonic Array played?

A: They’re played with your fingers and a little bit of water. The effect is to create friction and with that, it generates tones.

And beautiful tones they are!
