Julia Othmer – Sound

Julia Othmer is a native to Kansas City, transplanted to Los Angeles; a captivatingly, magical, dynamic, force of a pianist/singer-songwriter.  Her sophomore album, “Sound,” dropped in April 2019, and it’s an intricate web of divergence.

Produced in Collaboration with UK based producer/composer, James T. Lundie; this independent album was recorded at “Frickin’ Awesome” Studios, in Los Angeles.  Is Julia is paying homage to the studio with her tongue-in-cheek, track “Frickin’ Awesome,” Maybe it is that Julia is having some fun at her own expense?  Honestly, why’s or wherefores do not matter, the simple truth is Julia, and her talented team is Frickin’ awesome!

From haunting and melancholy ballads, “As I Lay Dying” and “Homeward Bound” to the bouncy, effervescent, “Frickin’ Awesome” and two different mixes of “Hungry Days,” Julia’s prophetic, and potent vocals are upfront and present on every track.

In addition to Julia’s powerful vocals, the entire album takes full advantage of atypical instruments not usually found in contemporary music.  In addition to instrumental classics, such as keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion, brass, and rhythm instruments,  Julia and her collaborators incorporate the accordion, piano-organ, piano strings, slide guitar, charango, and ukulele, along with natural rhythms.  Every track was written either by Julia or a joint effort of Julia and James Lundie making this album a magical, musical adventure.
