The night was a Tributonathon! Is that a word? If not, it surely describes February 10th at the House of Blues in San Diego, CA. That night, we heard the music of Rush, Rage Against the Machine, Foo Fighters, and a killer testament to…Testament! Did you see what I did there? Well…you should’ve been there when these fans of those bands took the stage and brought us their BEST HITS all LIVE in one place! Pretty cool…
The night began with a “Disciples of The Watch” playing that thrash metal craziness of Testament, in a tribute that should carry respect from Eric and Chuck. The “Faux Fighters” brought the musical stylings of Dave Grohl to life, including the look…the lead singer looked almost exactly like him and the drummer kind of resembled Taylor. “Rage Again” took the stage with a scream from the energetic lead singer, who emulated Zack pretty damn well…and that guitarist was amazing! I should also mention, that same guy was also the DJ for the awesome classic rock mix-up we heard between bands. The final act of the night was a tribute to one of the best things to ever come out of Canada(I might be a little biased)…RUSH!
“Y.Y.Zed” brought with them a punch for the sound of Rush, including the familiar organ like foot pedals, and the synths made familiar by bassist Geddy Lee. The lovely and talented Yolanda provided Geddy’s voice, and sounded almost exactly like the band at their peak in the 70’s and 80’s. Going through familiar hits like Spirit of Radio and Working Man, and playing a shortened version of the 2112 Overture, these guys stepped into their Limelight, sounding Closer to the Heart as Time Stand Still. The Rush fanatics on stage played a few deeper cuts like Red Barchetta and Natural Science, spanning their early career and refreshing memories of music lovers who happened to find themselves in the audience than night.
