Okay, Folks… here we are again at the world famous, Belly Up Tavern, in Solana Beach, California. We are here to check out Metalachi: The World’s First and Only Metal Mariachi Band, along with the opening band, The Bombpops. I’m sure all the visuals are happening in your head, and while further explanation probably isn’t necessary at this point, we’ll just start from the beginning. Quite frankly, after what I was a part of tonight, I am so excited I don’t even know where to start.
I didn’t give much thought to The Bombpops. I just knew we had to pony up stage left early to be sure my photographer could get his shots. Holy snap, I was way outta line. Let me set the scene: The band walks onto the stage looking super cool on this uncharacteristically, hot, San Diego evening. Could they play? That was my question… Asked and answered: A tight, fun, band with two fierce chicks as front woman, both amazing guitar players, who just blew my doors off…like all the way off, and they can sing too. The Bombpops put on a super rad show, pure talent and they not only had me, they also had the sold out crowd at their fingertips from the first chord. The rhythm section was point and let the ladies shine. The fella’s did not go unnoticed – solid as a rock! They currently reside in LA, originally from San Diego, playing on a Friday night at the Belly Up, pre-gaming for their European tour, they left for the following Tuesday.
While I was trying to stick them in a genre…kinda thinking pop punk, then I felt more like rock meets punk, then I thought who really cares because they are destroying this place and sound so amazing. Their banter was over the top and crazy cool. There was some chatter after the song “Dear Beer”. Some dude was wearing an American flag t-shirt, Poli asked him if he was still drunk from the 4th of July (it was July 8th). He drunkenly replied “Jells yes, I am”! Thank you Poli van Dam Jen Ravaz, Josh Lewis and Neil Wayne. You are way too much fun, and I cannot wait until you get back here so we can see you play again. If they are ripping at a venue near you, do yourself the favor and GO, or let me know so I can. What an awesome way to get the party started! Kudos, I HEART YOU! Yeah, I bought a shirt – was too busy fan geeking out to have them sign it… sigh. #icarrysharpiesforareason
The place is all a buzz and super hyped to see Metalachi: The Worlds First and Only Heavy Metal Mariachi Band. The lights go down, way down, a bit of silence, we hear AC/DC’s Hell’s Bell’s. Do they know San Diego or what? The place went ballistic. We had no idea what we were in for, but knew enough to hold onto our hats and tighten our seat belts it’s going to be a wild ride.
The cast of characters is as follows:
Lead Vocals – Vega De La Rockha
MC – Warren Moscow
Violin – Queen Kayla Vera
Trumpet – El Cucuy
Guitar – Kiko Cane
Guitarron/Vocals – Paco Halen
I have to say before I get into the rest of the festivities. For full disclosure, I do have to make mention to the band’s bio. They do state to be bastard children who accredit Black Sabbath and their record PARANOID as their teacher and mentor and for nurturing the seed that would eventually make them what they are today. That being said, here is the rest of our experience. Yes,it is not a concert or a gig, or even a show, it is an EXPERIENCE.
The lights go up as they take the stage, and they are dressed as outrageously as they preform, and away we go….. After Hell’s Bell’s, they dive straight into Motorhead’s Ace of Spades. Who plays Ace of Spades with no drums mind you and a violin as lead? This band does, and they knocked it out of the park. It was sure something to hear and even more so to witness. I must pause right here and say the front-man’s banter is equally outrageous as their stage-wear. For example: “My Sister, Kayla has “the deadliest snatch”, and brother El Cucuy “has fireworks for a dick.” Maybe you had to be there, regardless, protect yourself if ever find yourself in the same building as Metalachi.
Case in point: Rockya asked how many people had seen them before, by a show of hands. They then asked who was a virgin? A show of hands when up again. The next thing you know there is a chair on the stage and an unsuspecting audience participant sitting in it. They had me at the first chime. Need I say more? Yes, I can,I say it often actually. Let’s face it, we are all nuts. There are good nuts and not so good nuts, and these bands are the very best of nuts.
The night was electric. I can’t wait to do it all over again. I would in a hot minute. Metalachi is not only The Worlds First and Only Heavy Metal Mariachi Band, they are a talented bunch who put on one of the best experiences you may ever have.
