The Lakehouse Hotel and Resort in San Marcos California plays host to a summer long outdoor concert series known as, “Live at the Lake”, where the lakeside and sweeping lawns are transformed into a beautifully picturesque music venue.
On September 30th, local tribute rockers, The PettyBreakers, played to a sold-out, 800, guest crowd on a perfect late summer Saturday. It was clear from the start that San Diegans were not yet ready to let go of the lazy-hazy days of Summer! The outdoor stage was framed by lawn seating that was backed by an outdoor buffet and bar and surrounded by lovely Lake San Marcos with their small boat docks, water features and rolling hills that created a picture fine art painted by the setting sun as opening artist, Allegra Douchaine hit the stage.
Allegra Douchaine is another San Diego based singer/songwriter that is a lyrical powerhouse. Playing a solo set, she started the fire that raged on throughout the event with her powerful vocals and gracious stage presence. A mostly all-original performer, her writing is from the heart and soul and delivers it with the emotion and voices of the angels. Allegra is a performer that inspires, energizes, sooths, heals and makes you fall in love all over again…or maybe even for the first time. This was my first time being her presence and I will be looking for her in the future.
After a short set change, San Diego’s own, Tom Petty tribute band, The PettyBreakers, took to the stage for two full sets of classic Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers! If you are any kind of Tom Petty fan at all, you have probably heard of or seen The Petty Breakers in action! They are one of the few cases where the word “premiere” is the correct and deserved description. This superbly accurate ensemble tours extensively nationally and internationally year-round. In the recent past, they were chosen to perform on AXS TV’s, “World’s Greatest Tribute Bands” and for very good reason, these talented individuals come together in flawless chemistry and never disappoint.
Fronted by Ozzie Mancinelli, a long-time seasoned musician, Ozzie’s channeling of rock icon, Tom Petty, is so fine-tuned one finds if almost impossible to concede to the fact that it is not The Man, himself! Ozzie is backed by an ensemble of equally talented artists, that makes The PettyBreakers experience one you want to have on repeat. It is not always the case, when covering a show, that I am wishing I was attending as fan instead of a professional capacity, but in the case of The PettyBreakers, but I became quite jealous of the 800 fans that had quickly risen out of their seats to dance, laugh, and sing along to every song. I found myself watching and enjoying the audience and their energy, love and support for the music that shaped their childhood, and now, the childhoods of the many children and young adults that danced along, as if they were a part of the legacy that is Tom Petty from the very beginning. Both sets included all of Tom Petty’s classics along with some of his deep cuts sprinkled in, as time sat in purgatory to when Tom Petty’s music and words topped the charts over and over and over again. Mid-set fans were treated to the addition of local Stevie Nicks, tribute artist, Michelle Tyler, for spot on renditions of, “Insider” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”.
“Live at the Lake” hit the jack pot when it came to inviting The PettyBreakers to perform on a quintessential late summer evening. The fans, young and old alike, partied, danced and sang along in harmonious controlled chaos. 80’s ladies danced in front of stage, date night couples hung out alongside the boat docks swaying in time to the music, toasting to a time in their life when their love was young, or maybe even toasting to a still young love. Children chasing each other to the crowd to find some sort of open space to play, dance and sing along with the rest of the crowd. I’m in big support of The Lakehouse Resort hosting these events year- round. Music is what pulls all of us together when everything else seems to be ripping us apart and what better magnet to start the process than the legendary Tom Petty and since the world has now been robbed of his presence, The Petty Breakers are the medicine and love that can help heal our wounds and fill our hearts with the music that makes us whole again.
