“Purpose for Pain” is about seeking a higher meaning, a spiritual mentality when dealing with our struggles and life’s painful moments. There are unexplainable, dark times that everyone goes through, and that pain is real. If we can dig deep and hold on to hope during the most difficult situations, believing there is a purpose waiting for us on the other side, we can find meaning and clarity that gives us the strength to keep fighting.”
Scott Stapp has had his shares of ups and downs over the years and it has survived it all. As the former front man for mega rock band Creed he wrote and performed Grammy award winning songs and recorded albums that topped the charts resulting in over 50 million albums sold worldwide. The band sold out arena shows and a massive amount of radio airplay leading to a superstar status.
As with many successful musicians Stapp became addicted to drugs and alcohol. He admits that his actions led to the breakup of the band which he says broke his heart.
He dove right into a solo career and released two albums “The Great Divide” in 2005 and “Proof Of Life” 2013. Again, his music was well received hitting the number 1 spots on Billboard. However Scott’s addictions were escalating. He began having delusions and finally a mental break down. With the support of his wife and Musicares, he checked into a treatment facility and was able to kick his addiction.
Overcoming his addiction was only the first step to getting well. Stapp discovered that he had underlying depression and bipolar disease. Self-medicating to relieve the symptoms was his way of coping. Now sober, he had to find ways to address his depression and mental illness.
Health and fitness became his new go to. He became obsessed with running, lifting weights and attending boot camp style classes. Working out, eating healthy unprocessed foods and only drinking water was his new normal. After 3 years of sobriety, he began to feel creative again and started writing and recording the latest album released on Napalm Records entitled “The Space between the Shadows”.
Stapp and his band performed live to a full house at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Each song strong, meaningful and perfectly presented with passion. The lyrics reflect what this man has been through and show what a survivor he truly is. He has brought his same successful songwriting skills that he is known for in Creed. The music rocks, it is melodic full of style and meaning. The band performed some Creed classics such as “Arms Wide Open” and “Higher” and “My Own Prison”
Stapp is authentic and empowering performer who shares his personal journey through his music. If you haven’t listen to his solo material I would urge you to. Each song tells a story, for example in “Name” the lyrics say: “I am a son without a father, he gave me a name and walked away. I am a man, now a father and I swear my son will never know that pain.” Survivor is another great tune; they all are and of course they performed Purpose for Pain. I could go on and on, but my suggestion is that if you enjoyed Creed’s music (50 million of you did), than spend some time with these tunes and see Scott live. You’ll be taken on an amazing journey…
