If you thought the age of the AOR and Melodic Rock was gone, you are “Sunstormly” mistaken! Joe Lynn Turner has been keeping it safely stored in the waxgrooves created by this powerhouse of five Rock Stars, collectively known as Sunstorm!
If the name I mentioned sounds familiar, it should! From his career with Rainbow and AL Greenwood to his touring with Pat Benetar and Night Ranger, Joe Lynn Turner has played with the best of them, seeing his biggest success with the Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteenon the album “Odyssey.”
Since 2006, Joe has kept his AOR roots tightly formed in this gem of a project. This new album, titled “Edge of Tomorrow” and available on Amazon.com, features the similar AOR/Melodic Rock styling of the previous albums while incorporating some of the heavier attitude seen in his recent project titled “RATED X” that saw it’s recent debut.
Edge of Tomorrow incorporates all the trimmings you would demand from an AOR band, including sweeping synths from the organ and uplifting shreds on the guitar. The title track gives you a heavy pad and an uplifting guitar intro that lets you know this ballad is going to energize you. Tight harmonies and steady drums keep your senses embattled as you give into the intense lyrics and vocals that suck you into the story that screams revolution…and makes you want to get up and do something about it!
The Darkness of This Dawn is about as “opposite” as you can get to the title track while still retaining the power of the Melodic Rock associated with this album. The strong synths focus on minors at the beginning of the track with some deep screaming guitar licks warning you that something evil this way comes…it’s a story of confusion and sadness sung beautifully orated by Joe Lynn Turner himself.
