Twenty One Pilots – Smithereens

Misterwives

“Twenty One Pilots” how much more exciting can an evening be? This time it felt like I couldn’t drive fast enough to the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I absolutely love reviewing shows at the BOK center for the simple fact; the staff is always (and I mean always) super friendly, super helpful and on top of their game. The concession stands have great food and of course drinks and the security guards make sure everybody in the center is safe and can enjoy themselves. We all forget a lot of times how much work it takes to put a concert together so people like us can have a blast and for that I would like to thank everybody involved.

Ok, now it’s time to move on to the evening. Before the show even began the audience had their cell phones out and were drawing circles and squares in the air. If you are a “Twenty One Pilot’s” fan you will know what that means.

Our opening band tonight was called “MisterWives”, they originated from New York City in 2012, the lead singer Mandy Lee decided she wanted an 80’s cover band for her birthday party and that is when everything began. I personally had never heard of this band but these guys instantly won my heart and ear over. Mandy Lee has a beautiful voice and looks so happy and worry-free hopping around on stage while performing her songs. The music makes you want to get up out of your chairs and move along to the beat. These guys were super fun and if you get a chance, check them out.

The moment has finally arrived for the Twenty One Pilots Stage Crew to set up for their appearance.

The crowd went nuts when the curtain finally fell and “Twenty One Pilots” started their show with their song “Jumpsuit”. The stage had a burning car in the background and lots of different lights flashing. It was stunning and I was in total awe. I have had heard in the past that “Twenty One Pilots” put on good a show but it blew all my expectations out of the water. Now I understand why fans were camped outside the BOK Center all night long and why there was a huge line wrapped around the Center when I got there.

The Band consists of an American musical duo Tyler Joseph (Lead singer) and Josh Dun (Drums) from Columbus Ohio and was formed in 2009. Ever since then they have had nothing success. Tonight; parents, kids, and even grandparents were at the show singing and rapping along with the music. It was a huge party and the longer the show went on the better the party got. We rocked along with “Heavydirtysoul”, “Stressed Out” and “Heathens”. After about eight songs the lead singer Tyler Joseph left the stage so he could walk through the crowd on to a second stage, towards the other side of the Center. He then kept on performing “Smithereens” and another beautiful song of his “Tear in My Heart” with lights around him coming down from the ceiling. I loved how he started “Bandito” with the piano. This is one of my favorite songs. Back on the other stage Tyler actually stepped on to the crowd and they supported his weight vertically and held him in the air while he performed his song “Holding On To You”.  Another highlight was when “MisterWives” came back on stage to perform the song “Cut My Lip” together with “Twenty One Pilots”. You could tell that they had the time of their life’s on that stage. It was bittersweet for both bands because it actually was the very last night performing on their tour. The energy in the place was loaded and exploding. What better song to play next then “Ride.”  I think this was another song we all had waited for and instantly everybody in the BOK Center started singing the tune at the top of their lungs and then they followed it with a new song “Chlorine.” I listen to the song “Chlorine” in my car all the time when I am driving. It was one of the best shows I have been to.  We had 22 Twenty One Pilot songs to sing and rock along with and by doing so, we created new memories. Time just flew by and the evening ended with another great song “Trees”.  It was a concert I will be talking about for many years. Two guys put on one of the best performances I have ever seen and I can’t wait for them to go back on tour because I for sure will be one of the fans going to their concert again, but until then I will keep on listening to their songs on their albums “Blurryface” and “Trench.”
