I had the pleasure of attending Zac Brown Band’s the Owl Tour on its stop in San Diego, the show took place the day before the launch of their sixth studio album of the same name. Due to the time difference, the album dropped during the show so the band took a moment to celebrate the launch.
If you are familiar with The Zac Brown band you may know that they are considered a Country band. While country is not for everyone I can assure you that The Zac Brown Band is an exception. The amount of talent and musicality in this group is astonishing. They are known for pushing the genre to its limits. Taking influences from all sorts of genres, every album has a great variety of songs and The Owl is no different. When Zac was asked about this album he was quoted saying this:
“We’ve been working tirelessly on this album over the past couple years, ensuring every detail is perfect,” Brown said in a statement. “We are always pushing ourselves as musicians by blurring genre boundaries and incorporating all kinds of music we are personally inspired by, elevating what we are capable as a group. This album will have something for everyone.”
The Zac Brown band tours never disappoint, they mix in plenty of old, new and some good old jammin’ in with every show. This show kicked off with a great video montage, It included moments on tour, making the album and backstage. This was a great touch, It made the waiting time between the opening act, Caroline Jones, and the start of their set go by much faster and really hyped up the crowd for the start.
The show kicked off with the song “Free” from their first album, Foundation, and then Zac welcomed us all to the show. They continued on with a couple more songs from older albums including adding the song “Muse” that an audience member actually requested. In typical fashion, they mix in some covers of the songs that they love and that influence them, this set included songs from James Taylor, Dire Straits, Van Halen, Def Leppard and Rage Against the Machine.
Zac also took a moment to announce some information about Camp Southern Ground, which is a camp for kids that is funded by the band that strives to be inclusive for all children serving all kids including those on the autism spectrum, those with special needs, children of military families and underprivileged children.
The opening at was Caroline Jones. She is a fun and energetic lady with quite the history. She credits Zac as being the first person to take her under his wing and help her pursue music. In addition to touring with Zac for the second time, the first being back in the 2017 tour, She has also worked and toured with Jimmy Buffett. In fact, He wrote a song for her which she played called “Gulf Coast Girl”. Zac wrote a song her her too, which she also played called “Boys”
Jones co-produced her album, Bare Feet, in addition to writing the songs and playing most of the instruments (all but base and drums).
During her short set she showed off her musical talent playing multiple instruments including guitar with slide, piano, banjo and harmonica. Of course her set wouldn’t have been complete with her new single “chasin me” that plays often on local radio station, KSON. When Caroline is not on tour she is also the host of a Sirius XM show called “Art & Soul”. She put on a great show and was perfect opening act to complement The Zac Brown Band.
If you have not seen The Zac Brown Band, I highly recommend catching them the next time around.
